![]() ![]() This is where hiring an Indigenous, feminist writer or director would have strengthened the story. I do not understand why the Land chose a White man who has minimal interactions with Indigenous women. In class, Land was equated to women, motherhood, and the female body in Indigenous cultures. The land of Wind River (filmed in Utah) is an essential character in the story, and delivers justice through Lambert. The Land leads him to Natalie’s body, then to her boyfriend’s body, cloaks him in invisibility during a shootout with the oil company, and together they kill Natalie’s rapist. I noticed that while he does not interact with many Indigenous women throughout the film, he works very well with the Land. The White, male savior is Renner’s character Cory Lambert. Acacia Entertainment is owned by the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana (Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana 2017) Sheridan successfully took the film from The Weinstein Company, leaving Acacia Entertainment as the primary producer (Keegan 2017). Thus, Wind River’s ironic story is a modern interpretation on the colonizer narrative. #Wind river cast movieAdditionally, Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault crimes prevented funding for sexual assault victims from a movie about sexual assault. The hollow promises regarding donations to the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center continue the shameful legacy of colonizers using Indigenous bodies and land for profit (Buckley 2019). I also noticed my sources using the term “epidemic” to describe the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (Aadland 2019, Schilling 2017) after our class discussion on the inaccuracy of that term. Though it is not yet available for viewing, high school students on the Wind River reservation made an award-winning video on the topic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (Aadland 2019). If Sheridan had tried to tell a different story, it would come off as far more exploitive and ingenuine. This realization was discouraging, but ultimately, I prefer that Sheridan tell the stories he is most qualified to tell, such as recognizing one’s Whiteness and struggling to uphold a heteropatriarchal, masculine image while mourning. Once I understood that Wind River was actually about male grief and white presence on reservations, I understood how this movie could involve Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, yet, not be about them at all. I imagine Wind River’s primary characters (portrayed by White actors Renner and Elizabeth Olsen) reached similar conclusions, as did the writer/director Taylor Sheridan. As a colonizer’s descendant, I read Trask’s piece and felt terrible for centuries of wrongs I could never correct. Haunani-Kay Trask’s piece about haole presence in Hawai’i (Trask 1996). The second breakthrough was thinking back to when we addressed Whitestream feminism, particularly Dr. My first breakthrough was in reading the Rise Up Daily blog, when I saw that the grieving between Jeremy Renner and Gil Birmingham’s characters is far stronger than any feminine themes in the film (Armstrong 2017). After conducting research on the film’s production and release, I am disappointed that it is the only mainstream representation of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, but the story behind Wind River is just as riveting as the final film. Wind River was at the front of my mind during class because it was my only previous reference to the topics. ![]() The film appears in my thesis proposal as a new Western that breaks the traditional representation of time period, characters, and landscapes. Wind River (2017) was my introduction to the topic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. I look at that more acutely in Wind River.Wind River and its Concerning Lack of Indigenous Feminism When you become a new father, there are things that terrify you. Last month, Sheridan told us that the motif running through the trio was “fatherhood the sojourns of a father. Jeremy Renner plays the town’s game tracker who assists Elizabeth Olsen’s fish-out-of-water FBI agent to hunt down the murderer in Wyoming’s Wind River Indian Reservation.Īfter penning two back-to-back Cannes Film Festival entries-turned awards contenders, 2015’s Sicario and last year’s Hell or High Water, Sheridan calls Wind River his “most personal,” a conclusion “to a lot of themes” he introduced in these first two titles a reason why he sought out to direct this time around. The opening shot: a young Native American teenage girl runs to her death, barefoot in the snow. government clashing with protesters and the community of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation over the Dakota Access Pipeline, along comes Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River, a timely thriller centered around the continued injustice toward Native Americans in our nation. ![]()

However, Godawa runs with these three Magi and has them as the ones who mention the coming Messiah from their prophecies in the beginning of the novel and who pursue this prophecy at its end. Interestingly, that we tend to think that there were three Magi (wise men) in the Biblical account because there were three gifts presented to Jesus, but the Bible it says that either wise men or Magi came from the east to worship Him, not three wise men or Magi. I must say that another construct I loved was the depiction of the Magi that we know from the Bible, even though their names as given in this novel are not mentioned in the Bible but whose names we know from other non-biblical sources as Balthazar, Melchior, and Gaspar. It would translate well and I am not surprised at this given Godawa’s background. There was no slowness of pace or troughs in the plot. Godawa seems to be quite a master at pace, characterization, and action. I loved the action and adventure that is very much interspersed throughout the plot especially where it takes place in the East, in the region of Ch’in, which we now know as China. I had not specifically joined the dots myself with these and the Tower of Babel, and I loved how the Chinese have characters in their language that specifically relate to this biblical account and also that there was a Greek alternative of this as well. Godawa has joined the dots in his research of the Watchers and the Nephilim and how these are is connected to the Bible and virtually every culture and it is very consistent with much of the research and reading I have conducted myself concerning these topics. This is also an example of the research and creativity to make this novel realistic and credible. I guess what helped me in this was the list of the English pronunciation of the Pinyin translation of Chinese words and of the English translation of Greek words used in the text. I felt like I was in a Greek culture despite not being in Greece (but in Mesopotamia instead), as well as China, especially the latter, as this culture and environment were created very life like. You know exactly what he is describing and depicting. Godawa writes very well, specific, not too descriptive, no excessive difficult words. I have all his Chronicles of the Nephilim series and have not read them yet much to my frustration of having too many books to read and my passion for reviewing new authors novels and specific genres in Christian fiction! So in this situation, The Dragon King is one very good introduction to the writing and creativity of Brain Godawa. This is my first reading of Godawa’s novels. What’s great about the symbol is that you don’t have to explain its depth to others. If you believe in reincarnation or simply enjoy the concept, this could be a very cool way to demonstrate it. The Valknut tattoo can also represent reincarnation, as many people see the interlocking circles as representing the various dimensions of the world. This is because you are doing so with a pretty design that also has more than one special meaning attached to it. This is a very creative way to remember someone who has passed away. So, we associate Valknut heavily with battles. This is especially true for those who have lost a loved one in a war. They are honouring a deceased loved one or friend. People have given the most common meaning to Valknut tattoos. For many years people use Valknut, which means “knot for those fallen in battle,” to honour fallen Viking soldiers. But it often means much more to those who get the tattoo. We see it to be a simple symbol of three interlocked triangles. Also, who discovers that the Valknut has other meanings that work for them. The triangled Valknut tattoo is an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys Norse mythology. The interlocking triangles were thought to represent the link between Earth, Hell (the underworld), and the Heavens. People widely used and thought Valknut to symbolise the significant “threes” in life because it is made up of three triangles.įor example, archaeologists linked it to fertility, rebirth, and reincarnation. The three triangles intertwined represent the realms of heaven, earth, and hell. The nine points or sides of the three triangles represent the Nine Worlds of Norse mythology, according to Norse mythology. Some people still regard this symbol as a source against evil. The symbol also refers to the warriors gathered from the battlefield by the Valkyries and brought to Valhalla. This is because valknut translates to “knots of those fallen in battle”. Along with this, the power of the god Odin to “bind and unbind”. We also say that it represents the edge between life and death. We commonly refer to the valknut as Odin’s knot. Making sense of the various stories about their meaning always returns to Norse mythology. People interpret the significance of the symbol valknut meaning slain warriors in many ways. We can portray it as a triangular version of Borromean rings, the trefoil knot or triquetra (unicursal), or as a closed three-link chain. It depends on an artist’s or designer’s thoughts. The Valknut’s formation, like its origin and meaning, varies. Valknut appears frequently in objects associated with Nordic paganism and in locations occupied by ancient Germanic tribes. We don’t know its exact meaning despite the fact that it is made up of three joined triangles. From runestones in Sweden to ship graves in Norway, these ancient Viking structures can be found all over Scandinavia. It dates from the Viking Age, roughly 800 to 1150. It is a common symbol that people can find carved or etched in memorials and runestones. People form the symbol valknut meaning slain warriors from three interlocking triangles. The symbol has also become a popular design for company logos and even sports teams. The valknut is still a prime symbol for a certain Germain faith today. Meanwhile, people say that some depictions of Odin with valknuts represent the afterlife. Another story mentions the Norse God Odin and his ability to “bind and unbind” the human mind. People say that someone made the giant Hrungnir’s stone with three sharp corners in the book. It is similar to the valknut we know today. There are accounts that refer to a description of the ‘Hrungnir’s heart’ in the 13th-century book Prose Edda. The symbol valknut meaning slain warriors’ origins are as mysterious as the symbol itself. What is the Viking symbol for Valhalla?. ![]() |
